Darwin began his career as a pitcher

After spending most of the next decade in the minor leagues, during which time he switched positions to center field, Darwin established himself as a major league player with the Twins in 1972. s and drove in 264 runs, finishing in the top ten in the American League in home runs and runs batted in for both 1972 and 1974, while also leading the American League in strikeout
