The eastern and northern slopes of Black Mtn. drain into the East Fork of the Gila River; the western and southern sides drain into the Middle Fork.

Black Mountain is 9,287 feet tall. There is a good, narrow pack trail that is well maintained but not overdeveloped. The Black Mountain Lookout features sweeping views of the Gila Wilderness.
