The school was opened in August 1971 after the closure of Stevenston Higher Grade, which had served the town as the main source of primary and secondary education for many years. The site of Stevenston High has been occupied by Glencairn Primary School since 1982. The School was Official Opened on 8th November 1971. Its First Intake was 26th August 1971,
