at the M-1 Challenge XXI: Guram vs. Garner event on October 28, 2010 for the inaugural M-1 Global Lightweight Championship. The bout went back-and-forth, with Damkovsky getting the better of the striking. In the second round, Taisumov was able to takedown Damkovsky before hitting him with sustained ground-and-pound, before Damkovsky swept in the final minute and returned the blows. In the third round, Taisumov appeared to be too tired to attempt takedowns and opted to stand with Damkovsky. Damkovsky therefore won the bout by TKO (retirement) and became the first ever M-1 Global Lightweight Champion.
