The 508 area code was created on July 16, 1988 as a split from 617. Then, on September 1, 1997, area code 781 was introduced as a split from 617, while 978 split from 508 at the same time. The overlays to 508, 617, 781 & 978 were created on May 2, 2001, 774 is the overlay to 508, 339 is the overlay to 781, 857 is the overlay to 617, & 351 is the overlay to 978. The overlay area codes are used on mobile lines, none or few landlines use them yet. Area code 413 in the west part of the state currently does not have an overlay, however, 10-digit dialing
