Ankara University Medical School is a medical school
located in Sıhhiye district of Ankara
, Turkey. It opened in 1945 as the second medical school in Turkey, when Istanbul Medical School could no longer keep up with the demand for trained doctors.
It is one of the most selective medical schools in Turkey.
"Ankara Tıp" : The First MedicalSchool of The Republic (1945)
The number of physician was inadequate at the first years of Turkish Republic which had been making great strides on the path of modernization with a high population growth rate. Istanbul School of Medicine had been reorganised with the contribution of the well known professors came from Germany and started graduating 150 – 250 physicians per year. When the republic has been established, in1923, there was 554 physicians all over the country, in 1935 this number was 1625. When the number of students wanted to study at Istanbul School of Medicine increased, it was been inevitable to establish a new medical school. Atatürk, the founder of the republic, pointed out that it’s necessary to set up two universities in Ankara and Van at opening speech of parliament in 1937. A law legislated in 1937, was the first step to solve this problem. However the II. World War postponed the solution attempts until the end of the war.
Major-general Abdülkadir Noyan was appointed as Dean of Ankara School of Medicine by president İsmet İnönü and Ankara School of Medicine began training on October 19 194511am in Cebeci Hospital Gülhane Big Clasroom.
MorphologyBuilding which is in Sıhhıye Campus, completed and started training in 1967. İbni SinaHospital, with 1286 bed, started servicing on March 13, 1985, The Heart Center, with 168 bed, in 1996. The clearest feature of CebeciHospital which has 1200 bed capacity it’s horizontal placement.
Education System
Ankara University School of Medicine, provided training by classical system since it’s established, has an integrated education system nowadays, which partly includes evidence-based medicine, professional skills, discussion on a scenario, in accordance with technological developments. One of the most important feature of this education system is it can provide systematic and horizonal- vertical integration between Basic Science and Clinical Science. Cebeci Campus has internet laboratories, reading rooms, professional skill laboratories, where the students can gain experience on models, and MorphologyBuilding has Professor Rıdvan EGE Integrated Student Laboratory which makes easier providing students’ knowledge of basic sciences.
There is one year compulsory English preparatory class at MedicalSchool. The students passed an exam in English start first class of faculty. The students can’t pass the exam are taught in preparatory classes for one year. The year passed at preparatory classes is out of the normal medical training. It’s one of the firsts in our country that Department of Medical Education and Informatics established in 1999. The normal structure and function of the human organism have been teaching at first two years and defects of structure and functions have been teaching at third year in an integrated way. Practical training started at professional skill laboratories continues in the form of field studies and encountering patient at clinics. Training at fourth and fifth years continues as internship which is practiced at clinics. Our students do internship called Family Medicine Period Education at last year. After they complete this period successfully they become a Medical Doctor and have Medical License Diploma. MedicalSchool Graduates can work at primary or private health care institutions as practitioners. Physicians who wish to get specialized in a particular field of medicine may have the chance of specialty training at University or other training hospitals after having Medical Specialty Entering Exam.
Campuses
Morphology Campus
Morphology building was established in 1967. Dean’s, Dean Assistants’ and Faculty Secretary’s rooms, 13 Departments, 4 Disciplines and some administrative office are located in this building.
There are central library and two-storied conference room where can make all kind of scientific and social meetings. Our library had wide reading rooms, has 50.000 written and printed works. Also it has internet network all instructor and students can use. There are 4 more meeting saloon which can furnish service to 610 people and one more reading room for students use. Furthermore per unit have modern research laboratories about their interest. Also A. Olcay Tiryaki Learning Center has a computer laboratory which is belong to Department of Biostatistics, studying rooms, reading room, seminar room where lectures and presentations is making, Press Release and Public relation Officeand internet access is provided. At the back yard of the MorphologyBuilding there is a sport complex where various sport activities are performed.
There is a canteen which can serve up to 800 people, for students in front of the MorphologyBuilding. The upstairs of the building is designed for rest and leisure activities such as table tennis and music room for the students and down stairs has been designed for dining. There is a refectory instructor and the other stuff can use, taking interest in not only quality of the services but also Ankara scenery on top of the building.
Library
The Central Library, which is in MorphologyBuilding and covering 684 m2,has a reading room with 125 readers capacity and a storage covers 236 m2. Working of establishing a Central Library had been started on 23.01.1983 and it has become current state.
The collection of the Central Library consists of books, theses and periodicals. The library has 209 periodical subscriptions for 2010. There are 15046 fixture books.
İbni Sina Campus
There are various specific care units which had been established in accordance with scientific developments in the world, to supply patients’ needs. Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases AIDS Laboratory, Department of Neurosurgery Functional Neurosurgery Unit, Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation Reanimation Unit, Department of Urology, ESWL Unit and Laser Therapy Unit Urodynamic Laboratory, Department of Nephrology Peritoneal Dialysis Unit, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Department of Hand Surgery, Microsurgery reconstruction, small joint arthroscopy, which is made by the use of technologies in the world's ultimate, are some of these.
Our 26 operation room which is in the İbni SinaHospital central operating theatre have approximately 100-110 surgery per day.
More than 12000 sessions of hemodialysis is performed in a year for 1500 patients with 35 devices at the Hemodialysis Unit. Chronic peritoneal dialysis is also performed at the CAPD unit.
Approximately 30 kidney transplantations from living donors and cadavers are performed in a year. Furthermore liver transplantation practice from living donors like cadaver carries on with the continuing success.
The number of the patient who have analyzed is increasing through modern equipment and perfect results with international quality control at İbni Sina hospital Central Laboratory.
Our Emergency Service which was refreshed and opened in 2007 as the biggest emergency service of Turkey furnishes service to approximately 30.000 out and inpatients.
Hasan Ali Yücel Conference Hall which has180 seat, has being hosted so many scientific meetings including participants from domestic and foreign from the day of entry into service.
Cebeci Campus
The clearest feature of CebeciHospital which has 1200 bed capacity is it has a horizontal placement between large green areas. The campus consists of 35 buildings.
Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation which is the modernist rehabilitation center of Turkey and opened in 1996, Neurologic and Orthopedic disabilities are being rehabilitated. Department of Hematology is carried out Bone marrow transplantation in Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit to 100 patients per year. Our hospital has become a reference center about this issue and has been accepted the European Bone Marrow Transplantation Union, as 117th Center.
All modern treatment methods used in the Radiotherapy field are presented with sufficient bearing capacity in Department of Radiation Oncology. Departments of Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology have been serving in the same place.
The Common Operating Theatre which has 6 operation room has opened in 2001 with modern operation rooms, intensive care units and sterilization units.
Department of Obstetrics and GynecologyBuilding opened in 1967 have all modern diagnostic and treatment departments, operating rooms and delivery rooms, laser unit and the electronic centralized fetal monitoring unit, "Perinatology", "Test Tube Baby," "Menopause" units. Infertility Diagnosis and Treatment Research and ApplicationCenter have been serving in this building.
Department of Pediatrics Building opened in 1963, is an environment where valuable physicians has grown with all types of opportunity. The building has a Neonatal Unit was established in accordance with modern medicine. Also the Child Emergency Service offers service for 24 hours.Institute for Leprosy opened in 1961 serves to patients with leprosy and dermatological problems.
Central Laboratory opened in December 1995 serves for 24 hours.
Department of Chest Diseases and AllergyDepartmentBuilding is located in one side of 50th Anniversary Lecture Room which has established in 1972 with 296 seat, on the other side of it Department of Psychiatry and the Children's MentalHealthDepartmentBuilding serves.
Department of Chest Diseases is one of the leading clinics with Intensive Care Unit, Bronchology, pulmonary function tests, a catheter laboratory, a Smoking Cessation Clinic, COPD follow-up Clinic.
Department of Ophthalmology which serves as the most modern Eye Clinic of our country, has a clinic established in 1964 and a polyclinic established in 1973. In the OphthalmologyBuilding serves with Retina, Strabismus, Contact Lens, Tumor and Uvea Units. VehbiKocEyeHospital opened in 2007, also is an important health investment.
Modern Heart Center Building which is include Departments of Cardiovascular Surgery and Cardiology and established in 1996, is a center used advanced technologies in intensive care, angio, and other units.
In the Department of Public Health Building opened in 1980, practical applications are made about rural medicine and family medicine.
