AOT functioned as a high school fraternity in a school formally known as Manual Training High School in the Park Slope section. AOT was incorporated as a non-profit organization on March 23, 1948, in New York State.

AOT expanded in Long Island

, New York and Middletown, Connecticut in the 1950s. The Long Island branch grew to about 10 chapters. In the 1970s through the 1980s fraternity life became violent and many of the rival high school fraternities fought each other in rumbles and street fights. As a result, all fraternities were banned from local high schools and harassed into disbanding by local law enforcement.

In 2007 two new chapters of AOT were chartered in Calgary, Canada at the University of Calgary and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. The U of C chapter disbanded after its first year. The SAIT chapter still functions as a college fraternity.

AOT still functions as an alumni organization and actively seeks to charter new chapters in colleges in North America.
