Bawtree is married to Victoria Rowcroft, who is the Assistant Director of Music and former Head of Academic Music at Christ's Hospital as well as an assistant housemistress in one of the boarding houses.

Bawtree was educated at Christ's Hospital before he attended the Royal Academy of Music

Bawtree worked as a church organist in a few churches in England. He is the musical director of Worthing Choral Society, and the conductor of the Weald Choir of Crawley.
