. Southampton won the match 4–1 to give them their first silverware since winning the 1976 FA Cup. The attendance may not be as high as it could have been because Carlisle did not require the maximum amount of seats, whereas Southampton F.C would have been able to sell more than their amount given, and this had angered the fans as Wembley Stadium would have some parts empty, and they could have been used by Southampton fans.
