It was built in 1925. An addition was added in 1955. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

It was covered in a Multiple Property Submission study of Downtown Stamford Ecclesiastical Complexes. Out of 11 complexes including 26 buildings covered in the study, the Zion Lutheran Church was the most recently built. The church is the second church constructed by German Lutherans in Stamford; an earlier church was built in 1897.
