Zaniolepis is a genus of scorpaeniform
fish known from the fossil record, with a single extant species. This genus (and therefore this species) is the only member of the subfamily Zaniolepidinae.
The living species, the longspine combfish (Z. latipinnis), has rough, sandpaper-like skin, and lives in cold marine waters. It inhabits the muddy bottoms of shallow coastal waters, between 35 and 250 meters (100 to 800 feet) depth. It is endemic to the Northeast Pacific Ocean
