. In 1976 he entered the IDF and trained as a paratrooper. He continued to advance through the ranks, becoming the commander of the Paratroopers Brigade, several Israeli divisions, and finally commander of the Home Front Command. In December 2007 Gershon was replaced by Yair Golan, without being given another senior position. This was attributed to the widespread criticisms of gross ineffectiveness displayed by the Home Front Command during the Second Lebanon War. He retired from the service later that month.
