, China. He was the six kid of his parents, who had a total of 10 children. His father was Xue Zhongben (徐重本) and his mother is only remembered by her last name, Wu (吴). Xu was from a poor family and did not receive traditional Chinese primary education until he was 9, and when he was 12, he was expelled from school because he rebelled against rich classmates who bullied classmates from poor families like him. Xu spent more than a dozen years as a miner after that. He joined the Communist Party of China
