, he was admitted to bar in 1873 and served as judge in the Chief Court of the Punjab, as vice-chancellor of Punjab University, additional member of the supreme legislative council of India 1892-93, and member of the Punjab legislative council 1898-99. He was knighted in 1895.

He won the seat in Parliament for northeast Lanarks at a by-election in 1901, and held it until his death without ever fighting a general election.
