Accomplishments

The William Floyd High School Football team has won the Division 1 Long Island Championship in 2005, 2006, 2007 with a record of 33-0 during that streak. The team's longest winning streak extended from the beginning of the 2005 season until the playoffs of 2008 where it ended at 42 consecutive wins. They are responsible for some football players at Rutgers, Stony Brook and Hofstra.

Winners of the 2009 SBPLI Long Island Regional Robotics Competition at Hofstra University. As a result of that victory they qualified for the National Competition in Atlanta, Georgia, where they competed against teams from all around the country and world, including: Israel, Brazil and Canada.

Then you have the Wlliam Floyd Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team that has been in playoffs for the past six years and in 2010 they are now Super six Champions for the first time in History. Pete Freidman (head coach) has lead this program to grow tremendously, sending off more and more girls off to college with lacrosse scholorships and becoming successful individuals.

Music

The Music curricula for the district begin with Music Learning Theory applications in Grades 1 through 6 classroom music, as well as string, wind, percussion and vocal performance groups, beginning in grade 3. In Grades 7 through 12, students enrolled in performing groups are encouraged to participate in state and county evaluation festivals both as soloists and in major ensembles.

Traditionally, all major ensembles at William Floyd receive the highest yearly ratings in the New York State School Music Association Solo, Ensemble and Major Organization Festivals. Outstanding student musicians may be recommended for Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association Festival participation during grades 5-10 and New York State Council of Administration in Music Education High School Festival in Grades 11 and 12. The William Floyd School District is nationally recognized for its fantastic music program.

In addition, William Floyd High School offers piano courses, as well as music theory, and music in our lives. There is also a music honor society, Modern Music Masters or Tri-M. Students involved in at least one performing group that achieve high grades in all classes are involved.

Quiz Bowl

William Floyd High School is also home to a Quiz Bowl Team. Quiz Bowl is a club where students in teams of 4 answer trivia questions about topics such as: mathematics, world history, and literature. William Floyd High School has two teams, a varsity squad and a junior varsity squad, who each play in 5 matches per school year against other high schools in the Long Island area. In the 08-09 season, William Floyd High School's quiz bowl team was selected to compete in the televised game show, The Long Island Challenge, which is shown on a popular local news channel. The William Floyd Quiz Bowl team successfully won two matches, but then lost and was unable to go any further in the competition. The current advisor for this club is Mr. Craig Clasen.

In the 09-10 season, the Varsity squad won 3 rounds of The Challenge, and moved up to the semi-finals for Suffolk County, they were then defeated and kicked out of the competition.

School Shooting

On December 12, 2008 at approximately 8:10 PM, a William Floyd High School student, James Childress, was injured by a gunshot wound to the leg outside the school following a basketball game at William Floyd High School. Bystanders helped the student into the building to receive medical attention at which point emergency responders were called to the scene. The student was brought Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. The injuries were not life threatening. The shooting was committed by an adult that attended the game, not a student. Students were kept in the school under lockdown until police investigated and released them.

Teacher controversy

A William Floyd High School teacher was suspended with pay, according to the district, after she was arrested in Southampton Village on driving while intoxicated and drug charges. Around 1:28 a.m. on March 1, Lauren Neiderfer, 26, of Lake Pointe Drive in Middle Island, was arrested after Southampton Village police pulled her over on North Sea Road for a traffic and vehicle violation, police said. In addition to DWI, Neiderfer was charged with misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance after investigators also found cocaine in her possession, police said. Neiderfer has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation, the district announced.

"The William Floyd School District takes these allegations very seriously. The safety and security of William Floyd students is the highest priority," the district said in a letter posted on its Web site.

Neiderfer was released on $500 bail and is due back in court March 15, according to her lawyer Ed Burke Jr. of Sag Harbor, who said he was looking forward to the "vigorous proper defense" of his client.

Note: since this has occurred, Ms.Neiderfer has been relieved of her duties at william floyd high school. "As a school, we promote good behaviors and choices. How can we set expectations for students that our staff cannot meet?" - Bob Feeny, William Floyd High School Principal
