 specializing in science. It opened in 1927. The headmaster is Mr R J Hewitt. There are three deputy headteachers:- Mr I A Berry, Mr A Owens and Ms A Bell; and an assistant headteacher - Mrs G A Wood. Together the headmaster, his three deputies, the assistant headteacher, and the school Business Manager (Mrs L Harrison) make up the Senior Management Team.

The school motto is "Aim High".

The school offers extra curricular activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh award lead by Miss J Mills who is head of RE and outdoor education. The three peaks challenge is another opportunity offered to pupils in year 10 and 11 ran by Mr G Hind MBE who is the aim higher coordinator.

The school has a body of governors which consist of staff, parents, partners, members of the community and a representative from the Local Education Authority.

The school has a parents' association which has takes part in fund raising and functions as a contact between parents and the staff and govenors.

The school has applied to become an Academy in September 2011.
