WZEE originally signed-on in 1948 as WKOW-FM, owned by WKOW-AM (now WTSO

). The station was sold in the early 1950's and became WMFM. When Z104 debuted in 1975 it was running an automated top 40 format XT40 from Drake-Chenault programming. A popular promotional vehicle at the time was the Z-104 Coke-Demin machine.

It also features popular morning DJs "Connie and Curtis".
