WMYS-LD is a digital
low power-TV station
on channel 23 which maps via PSIP to virtual channel
69 in South Bend
. Previously, channel 69 was South Bend's WB affliliate, which then moved to sister station WMWB-LP channel 25 (now CW
affiliate WCWW-LP
). Before that, WMYS was a translator of WBND-LP
, the ABC
affiliate. WMYS is owned by Weigel Broadcasting
. In September 2006, WMYS became an affiliate of Fox
's new sister network, MyNetworkTV
. The station is currently branded as My Michiana. WMYS also carries Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs games that are carried on WCIU-TV in Chicago. The station also airs the classic television comedies and dramas and retro commercials associated with Weigel's Me-TV digital subchannel
network, but it is not branded by that name as it was on Me-TV's originating stations in Chicago or Milwaukee due to their network affiliation and a good amount of first-run current programming within their schedule. The full Me-TV schedule has also been available since early 2011 via WBND-DT2.
In early August 2008, Weigel Broadcasting agreed to sell all three of its South Bend stations, including WMYS, to Schurz Communications
, the longtime owner of the local CBS
affiliate WSBT-TV
, for undisclosed terms. However, in the absence of action by the Federal Communications Commission
, the deal was called off in August 2009.
On November 30, 2010, WMYS turned off its analog signal on channel 69 because of a power supply failure although the station remains available on its digital companion signal and on digital cable. The station had a construction permit obtained by the FCC
to move its analog signal to channel 34, since channel 69 is an out-of-core allotment for post-DTV transition television broadcasting and LPTV stations are currently under no obligation to cease analog broadcasts.
