The station began in late-1998 alongside the launch of The WB 100+

 announced it would start up another new network called MyNetworkTV

. This new service, which would be a sister network to Fox, would be operated by Fox Television Stations and its syndication division Twentieth Television. MyNetworkTV was created in order to give UPN and WB stations, not mentioned as becoming CW affiliates, another option besides becoming Independent.

The second network was also created in order to compete against The CW. WBPN joined MyNetworkTV on September 5, while on September 18, WBXI began serving as the area's CW affiliate for the network as part of The CW Plus. This is a similar service to The WB 100+. It was not until September 2007 when the station started to be simulcasted on a new second digital subchannel of WBNG and began using the WBNG-DT2 call letters in an official manner.
