. He graduated the Moscow Military Command High School (:ru:Московское высшее военное командное училище) in 1971, and Frunze Academy in 1978.

He served in various command positions in the Belorussian Military District

, and later became commander. He transferred to the position of the Commander of the North Caucasus Military District

 in December 2002. He was promoted to the rank of General of the Army in December 2003.

In July 2004, he assumed position of the Commander of the Volga-Urals Military District
