Motor vehicle registration

As of 2008, the DMV has 7,698,416 active registrations, 1,696,795 (22%) of which are special or personalized plates. In 2008, 1,624,146 pairs of license plates were sold, with 831,361 of them being personalized plates.

Driver licensing

As of 2008, the DMV has 5,301,182 licensed drivers, with 2,224,150 drivers license related transactions occurring in 2008.

Incidents

For eight days beginning August 25, 2010, the Virginia DMV's computer system had an outage. The DMV was unable to process driver's licenses and other important transactions. The incident cost the state $1.2 million. It was the worst DMV computer outage since 2007.
