Undergraduate Courses

 (BCS) for full professional membership.

BSc (Hons) Computer Science -
For the first two years of the course, a solid foundation of programming and the computing knowledge is made. In following two years the students can select from a variety of classes such as Program and Software Design, Computer Architecture and AI.

MEng Computer Science -
Uses the same basic structure of the BSc(Hons), however the MEng has additional business and relevant law classes. In year 4 a six-month's paid placement is also given; in the final year of the course you will be set a major practical project, usually related to your placement.

BSc (Hons) Software Engineering -
The first two years of the course are in the same classes as the Computer Science students but between year three and four, a year's paid placement is given.

BSc (Hons) Business Information Systems -
This 4 year course teaches the core subjects of Computer Science with the addition of three business courses(two of which you will choose to specialise in).

BSc(Hons) Computer Science with Law -
This 4 year degree teaches the basic fundamentals of Computer Science plus classes which teach the legal issues which the Computing Industry is faced with; such as copyright and freedom of information.

BEng/MEng Computer and Electronic Systems -
This 4 (5 if MEng) year course allows students to be taught in the two fields of Computer Science and Electronic engineering, giving them a solid grounding to work in both.

Postgraduate Courses

The department currently offers 8 post graduate courses:

MSc/PgDip Computer and Internet Technologies-
This course provides graduates with the fundamental knowledge that is the foundation of the Internet, and to develop the necessary skills to understand and build advanced Internet systems.

MSc/PgDip Information and Library Studies-
This course covers the creation, storage, retrieval and distribution of information in organisations and in society at large and therefore spans both public and private sector libraries and information systems and services, together with related subjects such as management, publishing and the evaluation and use of information.

MSc/PgDip Information Management-
The course provides participants with core business, management and technology skills, with a particular focus on business information systems.

MSc/PgDip Forensic Informatics-
This course provides the knowledge and skills needed to investigate the criminal use of computers and electronic communications.

MSc/PgDip Business Information Technology Systems-
The MSc Business Information Technology Systems is designed around four modules representing the balance of business understanding, knowledge of IT and personal practice.

PhD or MPhil (Doctorate or Masters by Research)-

 research study in any of the areas relevant to the research of its staff.

MRes Automated Planning for Autonomous Systems-
The course is a one year, intensive Masters course. It consists of a taught component that covers the most recent advances in the field, providing the foundations in a range of AI techniques that are used in planning research, followed by a project that is designed to offer direct experience in the deployment of AI Planning and autonomous systems.

Research Groups

The department has 5 established research groups: i-Lab, Software Systems Group (SOSYG), Strathclyde Planning Group, Mathematically Structured Programming, and the Global and Mobile Dataflow Systems Research Group.

The University of Strathclyde CIS department utilises the Strathclyde Personal Interactive Development and Educational Resource (SPIDER), an online learning portal, created specifically for the University.
