was defeated for re-election by Republican Bob Inglis
. The open seat in the 6th congressional district
remained with the Democrats and the composition of the state delegation after the elections was even at three Republicans and three Democrats.

was shifted from its northeast position in the state to the central part of the state where it could encompass many of the black belt
counties. Incumbent Democratic Congressman Robin Tallon
thus opted to retire rather than run in a district unfavorable to a white candidate. Jim Clyburn
won the all black Democratic primary and defeated Republican John Chase in the general election to succeed Tallon in office.
