The United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA) was established by the United Nations Secretary-General
in 2001 to enhance linkages between the United Nations and other partners in the region. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah
was the first head of the office.
UNOWA remains a relatively small political mission focussing on cross-cutting and cross-border developments which actively works with ECOWAS.
Since 2007 it has been called on to report on its activities to the United Nations Security Council
every six months.
The current head of UNOWA is Said Djinnit
