History

Unionville’s one room schoolhouse was built in 1830 just north of the present Unionville Public School. The school usually had 40 students and one teacher, though attendance at the time was irregular because extra help was often needed on the farms in the rural area the school served. The one room school was torn down in the 1860s, and in 1892 a new two-story school was built. In 1949 two new rooms were added and in 1955 a one-room annex was built. The two-story school was torn down in 1977 to build the current structure.

Special Education Program

Unionville Public School’s largest program is the special education program. There are over four classrooms dedicated to helping kids with learning disabilities. Many of these students are integrated into regular classes to help create a more positive learning environment for all. There also children with physical disabilities that attend U.P.S, for whom special transportation is arranged. U.P.S has a room known as the S.S.C. (student support center) which provides a quiet learning environment for students who need it. A recess/lunch program called Peer Mentors is a program where volunteer students sign up to provide support, advice, mentoring/teaching or just a friend to children with learning disablites to help give them a chance at being 100% normal and to help them fit in.

Sports

Unionville Public School offers many sports teams, for the junior and intermediate divisions. These include basketball, volleyball, track and field, and relay for both divisions, softball for the junior division, and badminton and soccer for the intermediate division. They also have individual sports, such as cross-country running and track & field. The school mascot is a bulldog, resulting in the team name Unionville Bulldogs. The Bulldogs play against other York Region schools in tournaments.

The Bulldogs have an exceptional training for team and individual sports. One of the focuses of Unionville Public School is to create fun and competitive sports, but the athletes must still remain fluent in their studies. The teams have been built from teamwork to skill and players range in experience and physical skill level, but that has never stopped any of their players from playing together at their best.

Music

Unionville Public School has a concert band that plays at the B100 level. The band holds practice once a week after school and is conducted by the head music teacher, Will Stokes. The concert band has played in festivals such as the Ontario Band Association festival music alive festival and The Wonderland Festival. The school also has a jazz band which plays in Markville Secondary’s Arts Night and Junk Food & Jazz.
During lunch recesses, stage band, another form of band, practices. Performing at top notch levels, this band also attends and wows crowds earning Gold and Platinum Awards.

Clubs

Unionville Public offers a variety of clubs, including an Eco team, and a Prefecting team. Eco team is a team to help raise awareness of the environment and to find suggestions for eco friendly ideas within and outside school walls. Prefecting is the opportunity to watch over younger students during a lunch period. More clubs include student secretary and volunteer kindergarten work. Kindergarten work is a program where students can voulunteer to help teach and guide kindergarten students.

Events

The school participates in the Terry Fox run and the Legacy run. It also has other events like graduation fundraising, and bake sales to raise money for various purposes.
