The school district purchased the property on which the school is located in 1971 for $65,000 to accommodate future growth, but did not need it for many years. Preliminary planning for the school began in 1991. After the defeat of a bond measure in 1993 to construct the new high school, a narrow vote to approve a bond in 2007 paved the way for construction to begin. The school's name was chosen in September 1998 during construction, and the school opened in 1999(3 April 2003). At Union Mine, track is a big hit, Sacramento Bee and currently has a student body of about 953 students. Union Mine's school colors are burgundy, navy, and white. Their mascot

formats, dance classes, theater, and its marching band. Their football team has clinched the S.V.C title three years running and got up as far as the conference champions. Varsity softball as well as varsity boys basketball have also won league championships. The boys cross-country went to state and won Sierra Valley Conference title in 2007. They have many clubs such as Christian club, Key Club, Robotics Club, Peace Club, Leo Club, Rotary Interact Club, Culture Club, Environmental Club, and French Club.

Football

Union Mine features a freshman, junior varsity and varsity football teams.
For two years running, The varsity football team has beaten El Dorado High School in the first game of the season, allowing the Diamondbacks to claim the golden Nugget which sits in the front office (not an actual gold nugget).
