. The population was 1,024 at the 2000 census. The name is based on this location having been a gathering spot for the Mohawk nation, the dominant Iroquois tribe in the area during colonial times.

was 449.3 per square mile (173.4/km²). There were 436 housing units at an average density of 191.3/sq mi (73.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 96.78% White, 0.78% African American, 0.78% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.10% from other races
, and 0.88% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.88% of the population.
There were 417 households out of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% were married couples
living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.89.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 23.1% from 25 to 44, 29.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.0% who were 65 years of age or older.
