Traveler's Rest was built by James R. Wyly around 1815 and served as an inn for traveler's on the newly constructed Unicoi Turnpike. In 1833 it was purchased by Devereaux Jarrett and became the headquarters of his 14000 acres (56.7 km²) plantation. It is located very close to the site of the former Cherokee
