. It began as a regional race, the Thanksgiving Point Stage Race, and became the Tour of Utah in 2004. The Tour of Utah takes riders over Utah's climbs and diverse terrain. It was founded and managed by a local family of cycling enthusiasts until 2007, when it was bought by the Larry H. Miller group.

The tour was given UCI status after 2006 but the 2007 edition was postponed due to lack of sponsorship. The 2008 Tour of Utah then returned to U.S. national race status. It had five stages and $75,000 in prizes. It was on the National Racing Calendar. The 2009 race had a prologue, three road stages, a criterium and a time trial. After the 2010 edition

, the Tour of Utah was added to the UCI America Tour as a UCI classification 2.1 race, which permits ProTeams to enter if they so choose.

The race calls itself "The Toughest Stage Race in America" due to its heat and altitude. In 2010, only 71 of the initial 140 riders finished the race. After the upgrade to UCI status attracted a stronger field, 88 of the initial 120 riders were able to finish in 2011
