 Manager, Prints and Drawings at Te Papa Tongarewa, the Museum of New Zealand. He completed a Masters degree in Art History at the University of Auckland in 1979, with a thesis on twentieth century New Zealand portrait painting. He became, in October 1980, Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the former National Art Gallery of New Zealand where he first became responsible for the collections of paintings and works on paper which were transferred to Te Papa in 1997. In 1986 he developed a resource and research centre for the National Art Gallery. In 1992, Mackle became responsible for the works on paper collection which responsibility he continued when Te Papa opened in 1997. In this capacity Mackle has also explored printmaking
