 on loan in September 2009 and earned rave reviews from the Blue Square North side's manager, Darren Edmondson

Just days after the loan expired, Aldred made his first team debut for Carlisle when he came on as substitute in their 1–0 win at home to Wycombe Wanderers on 12 December 2009.

On 16 June 2010 Aldred rejected a new 1 year contract with Carlisle. On 29 June, it was widely reported that he would sign for Championship side Watford FC, with the fee to be decided by a tribunal, and he subsequently signed for the club on 1 July.
