The Jute Mills drew in a large labour force from the neighbouring states of Bihar and Orissa, as well as eastern Uttar Pradesh, quite often forming an overwhelming majority of the population in the area, living in shanty towns and bustees dotting the mill area. Economy

Titagrh Paper Mills was set up at Titagarh and Kakinara in 1882. It was acquired by Titagarh Industries in 1994. Paper Mills is now called Titagarh Wagons Ltd. Apart from that there are several jute and another Factories. Such as Titagarh Jute MIll No. 2, Kinnission Jute MIll, Brittania Engeeniring works, Standard Jute Mill, Empire Jute Mill, CESC generating station etc.
