Tindharia is a very old railway settlement and was developed by the road side (NH 55) along the railway tracks on which the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

(DHR) or toy train runs. The settlement has a Railway Hospital which also serves the local people of Tindharia. It has a recreation garden known as Smriti Van which is situated alongside the Agony Point Loop of DHR. The most well-known place is the Locomotive and Carriage Workshop, which was established in 1915. The workshop undertakes major servicing of steam locomotives and coaches of DHR, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also has a Steam Loco Shed which is responsible for servicing the engines of the Toy Train.
