As a broadcast journalist, Willcox worked for ITN News for many years as a presenter and correspondent. He was the network's Arts and Media Correspondent, as well as reporting from the United States on events such as the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Since joining the BBC Willcox has been an anchor with the BBC News Channel where he can be seen presenting bulletins at weekends. He is generally a relief presenter on the channel, but does have a regular slot late on Friday evenings. He can also be seen presenting on BBC World News as a relief presenter.
