There are two popular legends as to how Tiger got its name. The first is that it was named after a Cherokee

 chief named Tiger Tail. The second (and more likely) story is that the name came from the cry of roaming panthers.

, the town has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km²), all of it land. Tiger's elevation is 1,963 feet, with several wooded hilltops reaching elevations between 2,100 and 2,200 feet. The town sits at the base of 2,856-foot Tiger Mountain, a prominent Blue Ridge Mountain peak.
