Stapleton played at wing-back for the 2005 Tipperary Minor team before moving to centre-back in 2006 as Tipperary won the All-Ireland minor title. His father, Michael Stapleton won an All-Ireland Minor Hurling medal in 1976 playing at wing-back for Tipperary.

He made his National League debut for Tipperary against Dublin
