, Morris enlisted as a Ranger to fight the Indians in 1793. He settled in western Ohio two years later. He began practicing law in Bethel, Ohio
in 1804. On 1806-12-05, shortly after the beginning of the 1806–1807 term of the Ohio House of Representatives
, he contested the election of David C. Bryan and was awarded the seat from Clermont County
. During the following years, Morris regularly served in the Ohio House (1808–1809, 1810–1811, and 1820–1821) and the Ohio State Senate (1813–1815, 1821–1823, 1825–1829, and 1831–1833). He also served on the Ohio Supreme Court from 1809 until 1810. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1833, and served a single term. He did not seek re-election, instead nominated to the Vice Presidency
