The album is the result of several recording sessions, beginning with some unreleased songs from Starkweather's recording sessions from their 2005 album, Croatoan. The opening track "Epiphany" dates back to live performances in the late 1990s. This Sheltering Night was completed in 2008, however Starkweather had to terminate their contract with their former label Candlelight Records
