Marissa goes to Ryan and tries to persuade him to throw his brother a birthday party. Ryan becomes angry and tells her not to. A fight ensues, and Marissa walks away disgusted.

Seth and Zach arrive at Al Forno's to meet "Reed". To their surprise, Reed is a woman, who seems to take a liking to Zach.

Sandy works on a surfboard coffee table at his office when Carter stops by. Carter is looking for legal help because he made publisher Nick Morton look "sleazy". Sandy accepts the case, and talks Carter into surfing again, where they meet Erin, a pretty orthopedist and a friend of Sandy's. There seems to be some attraction between Carter and Erin. Sandy notices this and tells Kirsten they should play matchmaker.

Julie arrives at Lance's motel room, and pulls out a gun. She says that in one night, he destroyed a life she spent almost 20 years building, so she's here to kill him. The gun clicks, unloaded. She says that for a second, she wanted to feel like his life was being taken away.

When Ryan goes to say happy birthday to Trey after Seth convinces him to, they see Trey getting into a suspicious looking Camaro. They follow him. Ryan drives to Trey's apartment early in the morning and confronts him about going to buy drugs. Trey says he was with his parole

 officer tracking down a friend from prison. Trey tells Ryan that he gave his friend five dollars out of pity, but Ryan refuses to believe him and goes away. Trey bitterly remarks that he thought Ryan was going to take him to breakfast in his birthday.

Ryan stops by Marissa's and apologizes for the fight. Ryan asks for her help in getting Trey to forgive him enough to throw him a birthday party.

Julie receives a package in the mail. It's the tape, and a letter from Lance saying to meet him at a bar. Lance gives Julie every single tape he has. Julie gets drunk and starts hanging out with Lance; when he tells her about Caleb's betrayal, she confides in him about her own problems with Caleb. Lance says that he'll get rid of Caleb, frightening Julie.

 players. Ryan thanks Marissa for what she's done to help him and Trey. Just as Ryan and Marissa lean in to kiss, blood-curdling screams ring out: Jess had overdosed on drugs and passed out in the pool. Seth and someone else carry Jess out of the pool, and Jess revives.

At dinner, Sandy, Kirsten, Carter, and Erin talk, but Kirsten doesn't seem like she's enjoying the night. Suddenly, Sandy receives an emergency call from the kids. Sandy goes to help the kids and Carter goes to move his car. Kirsten lets Erin know about Carter's divorce and that it's been really hard on him. Erin seems skeptical.

When Sandy arrives at the Nichol Mansion, the police say they found a bag of ecstasy and, until they can find out who supplied it, they're arresting Marissa. Suddenly, Trey says he brought the drugs. When he is driven away, Ryan sees Trey has lied to protect Marissa.
