The club was formed in 1947 by the amalgamation of Westcliff Yacht Club, which was formed in 1900, and Nore Yacht Club, formed in 1902 from the old Minima Yacht Club site.

TEYC offers social and sailing activities for members with interests in Yacht Cruising and Dinghy Sailing. Races are held on a handicap basis for dinghies and shoal draft cruisers. The club is a 'Volvo Champion Club' coaching its 'Cadet' members in dinghy racing. Members enjoy a full social scene in the clubhouse.
