 and died there at age 45 of exposure on December 13, 1994. She had suffered from alcoholism

 for three decades and had been in and out of alcohol rehabilitation since the 1970s. She had moved into a new apartment the day before her body was found behind a printing shop on Williamson Street following a bitterly cold night.

She is the namesake of the Teresa McGovern Center, an alcohol & drug rehabilitation facility located in Madison. She is also the subject of the book Terry: My Daughter's Life-and-Death Struggle with Alcoholism, written by her father.
