as it started in the late 1920s. Football was introduced by the Turkish and Egyptian invaders of Sudan, and they formed 14 football clubs in the heart of the capital city,
although it is thought by many that the British were the first to introduce the game in Sudan

 in 1949. In 1956 the Association was able to form the first fully professional league in Khartoum state and in other states in the North. The club formed in the South by the British army called Youth of Juba wasn't allowed to compete. But then in the early 1990s when the nationwide league was formed this team played a full season with other Sudanese teams as Juba F.C.

In 1961 the Shield match between the cup holders and the league champions was introduced for the first time. However at that time it was played between the champions of each state in order to determine the champions of Sudan.
