, having three branches with similar checks and balances. The Executive Branch consists of the President, Vice President, and various staff members, and is responsible for most of the political lobbying and relationships with UWM administrators. The legislative branch consists of the Senate, which has primary responsibility for approving Student Organization charters, allocating Segregated University Fees, and funding grants for Student Organizations to put on events and conduct operations. Finally, the University Student Court (the judicial branch) consists of five student Justices and has the responsibility of settling disputes between Student Organizations and hearing appeals for parking tickets given in UWM parking lots.

Senate Committees

There are several standing committees of the SA Senate, including:
  • Senate Finance Committee (SFC) - charged with allocating the Segregated University Fee to campus units such as the Athletics department, LGBT resource center, Be On The Safe Side (B.O.S.S.) Shuttle service, and the Campus Activities Board. SFC's recommendations are voted on by the Senate and then approved or vetoed by the President.
  • Senate Appropriations Committee (SAC) - charged with allocating funds to Registered Student Organizations for events, travel, or operations. Large grants are considered twice a year, usually in December and April. Emergency grant meetings are held periodically throughout the school year. SAC's recommendations are voted on by the Senate and then approved or vetoed by the President.
  • Senate Oversight and Rules Committee (SORC) - in charge of reviewing the bylaws for the organization and conducting investigations into misconduct by SA officials.
  • Campus Activities Board (CAB) - New for the 2011-2012 term, this committee is charged with putting on large-scale events on campus like block parties, concerts, and tournaments to encourage more participation on-campus.

Elections

The President, Vice President, and Senators for each School or College are elected in April. The five Senators representing the Freshman Class are elected in October. Since Fall of 2009, voting has taken place online. Students who are eligible to vote receive a link to the ballot in their UWM e-mail account when the polls open. Elections are overseen by the Independent Elections Commission, which consists of an Election Commissioner approved by the Senate, the Chief Justice, and one other USC Justice.
