Playing career

Sanderson started his career aged 8 with Egremont Rangers but soon after switched clubs to play for his beloved Wath Brow Hornets, winning the National Cup during his time there. He stayed with Wath Brow until he signed a month-to-month contract with Gateshead Thunder

 in May 2007. After a successful trial period Sanderson signed a 1 year deal with Thunder in November 2007. Sanderson is currently the leading try scorer at Thunder and is widely renowned for playing in bright coloured football boots.

He is a former North East Students Rugby League, England Students Rugby League and Great Britain Students Rugby League international, touring Australia
