Jacobsen was born in Hong Kong, then a British crown colony. Her family moved to Australia when she was twelve years old.

Stephanie attended Sydney University where she graduated with a double major in philosophy and English literature.

Jacobsen is of Chinese, English, and Norwegian descent on her father's side, and of Portuguese
