The oldest building, Stenhouse, lies to the South of the area and is now known as Stenhouse Mansion, or Saughton Mill, formerly Stenhope Milne. The house is dated 1623, but is probably older in origin. It was rebuilt for the City Treasurer Patrick Ellis in the early 17th century, having previously belonged to Holyrood Abbey
. It is now occupied and maintained by the National Trust for Scotland
. The Edinburgh goldsmith Michael Gilbert rented the farmlands now covered by the modern housing of Stenhouse.
