The village has one of the long greens typical of County Durham. The mediaeval church is impressive and contains fine effigies of the Neville family.
It is known as the location of Raby Castle

with its surrounding gardens as well as its church. The village contains many locally owned businesses, such as the local newsagents, the Cutting Room and a teashop

Staindrop has two schools, Staindrop C of E Primary and a comprehensive, Staindrop School: A Business & Enterprise College. It has 3 pubs the Black Swan, the Royal Oak, situated in the heart of the village and the Wheatsheaf Inn, more commonly known to villagers as the "Top House".

Today Staindrop boasts a modest but popular industrial estate which is used by mainly local businesses employing traditional crafts such as joinery and plumbing. New innovative businesses such as Eco EnerG Solutions Ltd website are also setting up in the dale, they are early entrants into the renewable energy sector. They are helping to regenerate employment in the village as well as promoting the transition from traditional trades to a more sustainable set of products and services.

Three miles north-west of the village, Raby Old Lodge is a medieval tower house probably built for the Neville family of Raby Castle, restored in the 19th century and now used as holiday accommodation.
