History

The previous St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church was built from 1900-1901. When Pope Paul VI

 established the Diocese of Gaylord on December 19, 1970, St. Mary’s became the cathedral for the new diocese.

The first bishop of Gaylord, Edmund Szoka, had the present cathedral built. The cornerstone

 was laid on July 25, 1975. The new cathedral was dedicated to St. Mary, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
