The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is a U.S. state that is located in the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. The state borders Delaware and Maryland to the south, West Virginia to the southwest, Ohio to the west, New York and Ontario, Canada, to the north, and New Jersey to...

. The space serves as a gallery, venue, printing studio and art space shared by individuals, small businesses and non-profit organizations. It has survived as one of the mainstays of the underground art scene and remains an independent organization run by artists.

History

The group was first organized in 1997. Dubbed a "a 10 year experiment" by its founders, Space 1026 has been successful in maintaining that experiment and continues to grow.

The collective has managed to expand over the past four years to the current roster of 30+ resident artists. From printmaking to graphic design, music recording to video editing, there is a wide range of disciplines and media being used simultaneously in the multiple studios and workspaces. Artists who show in the gallery are from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines and include artists based locally and nationally.

Gallery & Venue

Art exhibitions are scheduled for each month and usually open as part of the First Friday events in Philadelphia. Performance pieces, music groups, and a wide range of events are held within the gallery space all throughout the month. There have been many notable artist shows in the past along with countless numbers of events. For a definitive list of past and current shows go here.

Screenprinting

The space is equally known for its screenprinting facilities and is used by resident artists and also by others in the art community. It serves as a creative resource for individual artists, but also as an important tool for freelance work and creating necessary graphic material for the space and events.

Rather than seeking out grants and funding, the individuals who work there equally share the rent and expenses of running the studio. By taking the financial responsibility off the gallery, they are able to schedule shows without regard to their profitability.

Artist studios

The two floors have been divided up into 10 separate artist spaces ranging in size. Some rooms include up to 6 artists, while others are large enough for one. There are usually 20 or more artists that hold a studio at any given time.

Businesses & Organizations

Space 1026 has been a strong meeting ground for artists and like minded individuals ever since it got started and has been a launchpad for many different ventures and media projects. There have been many businesses and organizations that have run out of 1026 at one point or another including:
