. Founded as Society of University Cartographers in 1969, it changed to its current name in 1989.

The Society of Cartographers aim is to support and encourage all those actively involved in the production of maps – whatever the method and format of map production. By providing information and opportunities to contact, meet and exchange views and techniques, they hope to support and encourage those involved in all aspects of mapmaking and maintain a high standard of cartographic illustration and quality, meaningful map production.

The Society was founded in 1964 at the University of Glasgow and was originally named the Society of University Cartographers. In 1989 the Society adopted a new title and constitution opening up membership to ALL those who regularly make maps.

The Society's membership is widely drawn from the education sector, statutory institutions, local authorities, public utilities and the commercial and publishing industry. The majority of the membership is UK based, but with a significant world-wide membership.

Networking

The Society holds an annual conference the 'Annual Summer School' in August or September. The 47th Society of Cartographers Summer School will be held on Wednesday 5th to Friday 7 September 2011 in Plymouth, UK - styled as 'SoC2011'

The Society maintains a mail-list, ''Carto-SoC'', for its members and non-members to communicate

The Society publishes a newsletter and an annual journal, the Bulletin of the Society of Cartographers

The Society now also has a Facebook group(for members and non-members) and a LinkedIn presence (members only)
